Foundations in Judo

Our Judo program is designed to give you a solid foundation in throws, balance, and control — skills that not only stand on their own but also strengthen your Jiu-Jitsu journey. Whether you’re brand new to martial arts or already training in Jiu-Jitsu, Judo provides a safe and structured way to expand your abilities. With a welcoming environment and step-by-step curriculum, you’ll gain confidence on and off the mat.

Supplement your Current Jiu-Jitsu Training

Judo adds a powerful dimension to your Jiu-Jitsu training. While Jiu-Jitsu emphasizes control and submissions on the ground, Judo develops balance, timing, and effective takedowns. Training in both arts gives you a more complete skill set — helping you start strong on your feet, transition seamlessly to the ground, and gain an edge in both self-defense and sport.

Great for beginners and beyond

Our Foundations in Judo class is designed with newcomers in mind — no prior Judo experience is required. Step-by-step instruction and a safe, supportive environment make it easy to learn at your own pace. At the same time, Jiu-Jitsu students and experienced martial artists will find Judo a valuable way to expand their skills and add new dimensions to their training.

The Legacy of Jigaro Kano

Founded in 1882 by Professor Jigoro Kano, Judo was created as a modern martial art that blends physical education, self-defense, and personal development. Kano’s vision was not only to build skill on the mat but also to strengthen character, discipline, and respect. Today, Judo is practiced worldwide and recognized as an Olympic sport — and its principles continue to influence arts like Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most frequent questions and answers about our Judo Foundations Class.

remove

Do I need previous Judo or martial arts experience?

Not at all! Our Foundations in Judo class is designed for beginners. You’ll learn step by step in a safe, cooperative environment. Many of our students start with no prior martial arts background.

How is Judo different from Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Judo focuses on balance, posture, and large curriculum of effective throws, while Jiu-Jitsu emphasizes, self-defense, throwing techniques, ground control and submissions. Training in both gives you a complete grappling foundation. That’s why Judo is such a great supplement to Jiu-Jitsu.

remove

Will I need special equipment?

All you’ll need is a Judo or Jiu-Jitsu gi (uniform). If you don’t already have one, we can help you get fitted with the right gear. Just wear comfortable athletic clothing underneath.

Is Judo safe for beginners?

Yes! Safety is our top priority. You’ll learn proper breakfalls (how to land safely) before practicing throws, and all techniques are taught progressively so you can build confidence at your own pace.

What benefits will I gain from Judo?

Judo builds balance, coordination, strength, and confidence. You’ll also develop timing, discipline, and the ability to control opponents from standing — skills that carry over to both Jiu-Jitsu and everyday life.

I already train Jiu-Jitsu. Will Judo still help me?

Absolutely! Judo is the perfect supplement to Jiu-Jitsu. While Jiu-Jitsu focuses on ground control and submissions, Judo gives you the tools to safely take the fight to the ground with effective throws and takedowns. Training in both arts makes your overall game stronger, more well-rounded, and more adaptable.
